A Primer on Electronic Security for Schools, Universities & Institutions This First Edition Primer was designed to assist educators, engineers, security personnel and suppliers to address and resolve the issues of potential terrorism or other acts of violence or disruption in our educational institutions.

There are numerous factors driving the need for meaningful change in the security considerations for America’s schools.

  • First, we need to carefully consider how we can mitigate the impact of school tragedies in both our small and large school districts due to our growing need to educate our citizens.
  • Second, an understanding of how to effectively manage security costs must be achieved.
  • Third, districts must stay abreast of the rapid advances being made in technology and communications.
  • Fourth, purchasing practices must be reviewed to ensure that the best systems and equipment are purchased for the applications.

Each of these areas needs to be carefully examined to insure that we are getting all of the things we require to keep our schools safe, productive, cost effective, and technically abreast of our ever-changing communications environment.
